AXIS PROGRAM

The AXIS Program assists an individual to manage their musculoskeletal injury with active and positive strategies to achieve improved functional outcomes and a successful return to work. The program incorporates functional, therapeutic and work hardening exercise with a cognitive behavioural approach to pain management.

It has specifically been designed to be part time, to coincide with a return to work.

The AXIS Program involves evidence based practice and the expert skills of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists, Psychologists and Occupational Health Physiotherapists. It can be undertaken at the following:

The AXIS Program offers various levels of intervention as outlined below.

AXIS Pain Management Seminar
The 3 hour group seminar is for clients who would benefit from education regarding pain management strategies. The seminar discusses neurophysiology of pain, physical and psychological strategies for self-management, recognising and overcoming barriers to recovery and setting goals for recovery. This interactive seminar with a Physiotherapist and a Psychologist encourages face to face problem solving.

AXIS Work Hardening Program
The Work Hardening program, run by a Physiotherapist, is a short program designed to provide specific strengthening and conditioning for people that are planning to return to their normal physical activities following an injury, including work. It involves 5 individual sessions over two weeks consisting of work hardening, upgrading functional capacity and specific strengthening required for the physical demands of the workers job. This program also involves attendance of an Axis Pain Management Seminar.

AXIS Work Hardening and Pain Management Program
The Work Hardening and Pain Management program is conducted by a Physiotherapist for clients who require a structured physical conditioning program using a cognitive behavioural approach. It focuses on gradually exposing and upgrading the clients to movements, exercises and activities (including work) which have been affected by their pain and injury.  This program also includes individual pain management education and provides strategies to assist the client to self manage their injury. This involves 10 individual sessions over 5 weeks.

AXIS Multi-Disciplinary Program
For clients who are off work or require improvement in functional capacity and self management of pain and related difficulties, before they can achieve a safe and successful return to work or normal activity. This comprehensive program involves the expert skills of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists, Psychologists and Occupational Health Physiotherapists. Close communication is maintained with the treating Doctor. The Psychological component involves cognitive/problem-solving strategies for managing pain and disability, planned activity upgrading, relaxation techniques and maintenance/relapse prevention strategies. This individual program is conducted over 5 weeks.

Screening/Suitability Assessment
This assessment (by a Physiotherapist or Psychologist) is designed to determine future rehabilitation requirements and may include a report with recommendations if requested.

Return to Work Services
The AXIS Program recognizes that further services may be needed to enhance the Return to Work process. We can offer:-

  • Worksite assessments
  • Development and monitoring of Suitable Duties
  • WorkHab Functional Capacity Evaluations
  • Vocational Assessments.

Axis Rehabilitation at Work
