What is spondylolysis?
Spondylolysis refers to a defect in part of a vertebra’s structure and can be associated with spondylolisthesis.
This is mostly a benign condition, however in adolescents involved in activities requiring repetitive extension and rotation it can be associated with the development of low back pain. In these circumstances it is important to talk with your general practitioner about getting specialised bone imaging and then seeing a physiotherapist about management. Usually adolescents will required 3 to 6 months off sport and then a gradual re-introduction to activity.
